Strong magnets!
Strong magnets that hold heavy knives quite well. Be careful the magnets will pull the knives out of your hand. Very nice wood finish!

Hoshanho Magnetic knife holder is attractive and strong
I was looking for something to replace my knife holding block to save on cabinet space. The Hoshanho Magnet knife holder was perfect. I did have some issues with installation, I am not a very good DYI'er but I managed. I think better instructions on installation with a guide for screws would have helped. I have had it up for several years and not one knife has fallen, and it has kept its magmatism.

Excellent smaller knife rack but I wished I'd gone with stainless steel
I needed a smaller knife rack for a spot in my kitchen which has limited space. I thought this rack would both fit the space nicely and complement my brown wooden cabinetry as well.I received the item quickly and am delighted with it for a few reasons: First, it was just the right size and color and secondly, and perhaps most importantly, I quickly discovered that it has VERY strong magnets that hold the knives firmly in place. It also comes with TWO large, double -sided adhesive strips. The strips are large enough to only require the use of one of the two, leaving the 2nd as an extra which is always good to have in case something goes awry with the installation using the first strip. I didn't need to use the second spare strip but kept it anyway as I expect it will come in handy when I have to move again in the next year or two. And while on the subject of these double sided strips, let me also say that they too are STRONG. If you plan on mounting this to a tile back splash as I have done then my recommendation for installation is to adhere the double sided strip on the back of the knife rack FIRST and give it a minute or so to set. Then I recommend that you clean the surface of the tile thoroughly with 70% isopropyl alcohol (DO NOT USE HOUSEHOLD CLEANERS AS THEY LEAVE A RESIDUE). Cleaning the surface with alcohol will remove any grease, dust or debris and ensure a maximum bond. After cleaning with alcohol be sure to let the surface dry for a good 60-90 seconds (do not rinse with water as it too may leave a residue as well). Why is this step so critical? In my vast experience as a handyman of 35 years I learned that cleaning a surface first with alcohol (not household cleaners) gives you a clean, residue-free surface that then, in turn, will provide superior adhesion that lasts. If you don't clean the surface with alcohol you'll find that the rack may hold at first but it won't stay that way as the adhesion will be sub par, resulting in the inevitable premature failure. A few more tips I'd like to suggest about the installation: have a smaller bubble level handy so that you can sit it atop the rack as you're about to place it on the wall. If you're a perfectionist like myself you'll be glad if you use this vital extra tool as it will assure an installation that's level.I also seem to recall that there are two keyhole shaped slots on the back of the unit in case you prefer to use the provided wall anchors and screws for mounting the rack to a hollow drywall (ie wall covered in sheetrock or plaster) or your cabinet (the anchors won't be needed for any wooden substrate, they'll only be required for the aforementioned hollow walls). But there's a caveat about using those wall anchors: you MUST ensure that you use a drill to make a PRECISELY-SIZED hole for the anchor and different anchors require differently sized holes. If you drill a hole that's too big or too small the anchor will not fit properly and you will wind up with a loose fitting anchor that will not hold. This leads me to a major gripe of mine: Although they provide the screws and anchors they do NOT provide instructions - leaving one to have to guess what the correct size hole that's needed for the anchor. Trust me on this: either find out for certain what size hole you need to drill (ie don't guess) or just go to your local hardware store and buy a packaged set of anchors that have a clearly written set of instructions that include the all-important correct size hole that needs to be DRILLED. Believe me when I tell you that you will be sorry if you use the anchors and ignore this critical detail. I always say that it's takes effort to do something once so I especially don't want to have to double my effort to do it twice. In short, do it right the FIRST time and save yourself the extra aggravation and the inevitable expletives that will surely follow when one finds that he or she has to do the a second time. But good directions for the wall anchors (for those who'll need to use them) would certainly help get the job done right the FIRST time. To be forewarned is to be fore armed. My only regret in buying this unit, if one could even call it that, is the brown finish that I thought would make a nicer appearance in my kitchen. I believe the brown finish on this item is stained and not painted on but regardless of which it is I can tell you that it seems to scratch easily (see photos). I have serrated knives on the rack and any lateral movement of those knives seems to catch the wood at times and consequently leaves small scratches which most people wouldn't probably notice or care about - but as I said, I am a self-admitted perfectionist and for this reason I realize that perhaps I would have been better off with a stainless steel unit. But I still like this item very much and would recommend it nevertheless. I'd have given it 5 stars had clear, precise instructions for an installation using the anchors been included . I didn't need to use the anchors but that's one demerit nonetheless just on principle. It has become a standing policy of mine to automatically deduct one star for any product, no matter how good it is, if the necessary instructions for mounting and or assembly are poorly written or, as is more often the case, not included at all. Had better instructions been included this item would have gotten 5 stars from me. A small detail that, in the final analysis, really isn't small at all especially for the novice who may need all the guidance they can get.I hope this helps.Good luck
